Baring sawmill sold to St Croix Paper Company

  • Baring International Bridge – State acquires control of US Side
  • Purchase made with plans for St Croix Airport

Chase Mill destroyed by Fire

The Town of Baring buys Airport from St Croix Airport, Plans for renewal

Baring School Building destroyed by Fire

1938

Baring begins plans to rebuild Schoolhouse

1940

Census Population – 190 (Decrease from 1930)

1941

The Town of Baring Deorganizes, Control to State of Maine

1943

The Baring Cemetery Association Incorporates to retain control of Cemetery

1944

State transfers Cemetery Deed to Baring Cemetery Association

1948

Baring International Bridge permanently closes to Auto traffic despite protests from locals

Census Population – 157 (Decrease from 1940)

New Law forces new Voting Place for Baring – Baileyville

1953

  • Baring School Year opens to just 20 Students
  • St Croix Valley Drive-In theater opened with “The Story of Will Rogers”

1956

Baring Bridge fire injures three

1958

  • Baring Customs Office closes
  • Baring School Vandalized

1959

  • Baring School has Heat Issues
  • Clifford Chase, Local Historian, Legislative Representative Dies at 77

Discussions of closing the school begin amongst local opposition

  • Baring gets new Fire Truck
  • Vandalism at Airport is investigated

  • The Unorganized Territory of Baring Incorporates to an Organized Plantation
  • St Croix Valley Drive-In broken into

Baring Fire Trucks struck by Vandals

  • County Officials Advise Baring to have a Board of Assessors
  • Baring Dump Deemed “out-of-control” Fire Hazard – State forces closure

  • St Croix Valley Drive-In Hits the Radio Waves
  • Baring Baptist Church undergoes $30K Renovation Project

  • Baring concerned about Solid Waste Disposal
  • Ability to Use Calais Landfill ends for non-payment

1980

Census Population – 308 (Increase from 1970)

Trash Pick-Up for Plantation suspended for non-payment

1981

Superintendent’s Office threatens Lawsuit against Plantation for non-payment

1983

17 People Attend Plantation Annual Meeting

1986

14 People Attend Plantation Annual Meeting

1989

  • Baring Plantation is approved by the State to become a Town
  • Baring had 1 year to meet requirements, but failed due to a lack of volunteers
